The Birth of the Wrap Braid

Ms. Frances Simmons, founder and creator of the wrap braid technique has created a braid style that can take a person from the tennis court to the boardroom with finesse. Frances’ aspiration to braid began in 1976, at the age of eleven.   Her childhood dream is now a reality, and she gives all praises to the Creator (God) for her vision on the wrap braid concept.

In 1984, her life changed.  She recognized her braiding technique was unique, that there was character developed in every stem. She committed years to understanding and perfecting her talent. She began to study the structure of the head and face. Frances practiced pattern parting and made use of the rope braid and cornrow to create various styles to compliment the shape of an individual’s head and face. She practiced building volume, utilizing the cornrow. With that method, from a distance people thought her braids were breathtaking customized styles from permed hair. Her vision was to accentuate her client’s positive features while camouflaging their flaws. Continuing to perfect her talent, she took pictures to analyze her work, and clients were eager for her to create a braid style just for them.

Frances eventually had a marketable business with clientele, but she still did not have a name for her way of braiding. In 1988, while still braiding, Frances attended John Amico school of Cosmetology in Chicago, Illinois. While continuing her education, she learned more about cutting hair, general hair care, and various products.   The best part of her journey at that time was she discovered a name for her own way of styling braids, and, “The Wrap Braid” was born! Frances still uses that name and technique to this day!

Frances Simmons is originator of the Feather Bob, Blunt Cut Bob, Spike Bob, Suede Bob, Taper/ Angle Bob, and Mold Bob.
